The Ultimate Candle Care Guide — How to Make Your Candles Last Longer

You just received a beautiful handmade candle. Maybe it's a floral bouquet arrangement, a sculptural cactus candle, or a personalized favor from a special occasion. Whatever it is, you want it to last and burn perfectly every single time.

Here's everything you need to know about candle care, straight from the hands that make them.

Why Candle Care Matters

A well cared for candle burns evenly, smells better, and lasts significantly longer than one that's burned carelessly. A poorly cared-for candle tunnels down the center, wastes wax on the sides, and loses its scent throw early.

The good news? Proper candle care takes about 30 seconds. Here's how.

1. Trim Your Wick Before Every Burn

This is the single most important candle care habit you can develop.

Before every single burn, including the very first one, trim your wick to ¼ inch. A wick that's too long creates a large, flickering flame that burns too hot, produces excess soot, and consumes your candle too quickly.

Use a wick trimmer, nail clippers, or small scissors. Trim it, remove the debris, then light.

For wooden wicks (like our Arizona Cactus candle): Trim to ⅛ inch and make sure the previous burn's charred wood is cleared before relighting.

2. The First Burn Is the Most Important

Soy wax has what's called a "memory." The first time you burn your candle, the wax melts to a certain point and every subsequent burn will only melt to that same diameter.

This means if you blow out your candle too early on the first burn, you'll get tunneling, a hole that burns straight down the center while wax pools on the sides, wasting a significant portion of your candle.

Rule of thumb: On the first burn, let your candle burn until the entire top layer of wax has melted to the edges. For most candles this takes 2-4 hours depending on the size.

3. Keep Burns Between 2-4 Hours

Never burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time. Beyond that the wick can become unstable, the glass can overheat, and the fragrance quality diminishes.

For sculptural candles like our floral bouquet arrangements, shorter burns of 1-2 hours are ideal, they preserve the shape longer while still filling the room with fragrance.

4. Keep Away from Drafts

Burning a candle near an open window, air vent, or fan causes uneven burning, excessive dripping, and soot marks. Find a stable, draft-free surface for the best experience.

5. Never Leave a Burning Candle Unattended

This one's non-negotiable. Always burn candles within sight, keep them away from flammable materials, and never leave them burning while you leave the room or go to sleep.

If you have little ones or pets, keep candles on high shelves or in rooms they don't access. Safety first, always.

6. Stop Burning When ½ Inch of Wax Remains

Once your candle reaches the last half inch of wax, it's time to retire it. Burning below this level can cause the container to overheat, especially in glass vessels.

At this point the candle has done its job beautifully. You can clean out the remaining wax and reuse the container as a small planter, a jewelry dish, or a storage jar.

7. Store Your Candles Properly

If you're saving a candle as a gift or display piece, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV light can fade the color of soy wax candles over time, especially for our colorful floral designs.

A cool room or drawer is ideal. Avoid storing candles in a car or garage in Arizona summers, they will melt.

8. For Decorative Candles — Display vs. Burn

Our floral bouquet candles and sculptural arrangements are designed to be both displayed and burned but many of our customers choose to display them indefinitely as home décor pieces without ever lighting them.

Both are completely valid. If you want to preserve the shape as long as possible, display it. If you want the fragrance experience, burn it. There's no wrong answer.

If you do burn a sculptural candle, light it from the center wick and enjoy watching the flowers slowly release their scent as the wax softens.
